Dr. Vanfretti’s expertise is in the area of advanced power system modeling and control, and smart grid and distribution system engineering. He received his undergraduate degree in electrical engineering, with an electric power concentration, from the Universidad de San Carlos in Guatemala. He earned his master’s and Ph.D. degrees in electric power engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and stayed on to do a postdoctoral position, before accepting a position as assistant professor at the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. Prior to joining Rensselaer, Dr. Vanfretti was promoted to associate professor in 2013.
“Dr. Luigi Vanfretti is a skillful and productive researcher. His technical interests and accomplishments fill an important gap in our existing work in cyber-physical power systems. Dr. Vanfretti’s addition to our power group substantially enhances our overall power system research program.”
